AMC Cinema Chain Adds DOGE Support to Mobile App

AMC to accept SHIB and DOGE

AMC Theaters Entertainment, the largest movie theater chain in the US and the world, has begun accepting Dogecoin, Shiba Inu and other altcoins through its mobile app. The AMC has partnered with the BitPay service for accepting cryptocurrency payments. To access the new feature, users need to update the mobile app to the latest version.

AMC's plans to accept payments in cryptocurrencies were first revealed in August last year, when the company's CEO, Adam Aron, promised that AMC would start selling movie tickets for Bitcoin at the end of 2021. Later, he also stated that Ethereum, Litecoin and a fork of Bitcoin Bitcoin Cash would be among the means of payment accepted by AMC.

In September 2021, Aron conducted a Twitter poll on whether users would support the idea of adding Dogecoin.

Users approved of the idea, and in October, the company began accepting Dogecoin – a meme-cryptocurrency popularized by businessman Elon Musk – as a means of payment. The company has also started selling digital gift cards for DOGE and other cryptocurrencies. Currently, Dogecoin can be used to purchase digital gift cards up to $200 through the BitPay crypto wallet. Payments can be made on the company's website, via a mobile application and in the cinemas themselves.

Later, Aron asked users what other cryptocurrencies should be accepted by movie theater chains. More than 153K users took part in the survey, of which 81.4% voted for Shiba Inu.

Last November, AMC finally began accepting BTC, ETH, LTC and BCH.

AMC Entertainment owns approximately 1,000 movie theaters in the US and Europe, but the company was forced to close them down due to the coronavirus pandemic. In 2020, the network's losses amounted to $4.6 billion, and in the second quarter of this year, they reached roughly $344 million.
