More Than 90,000 BTC Stolen From Bitfinex Set In Motion

stolen btc from bitfinex set to move

On February 1, Bitcoins that unknown attackers stole from the Bitfinex cryptocurrency exchange in 2016 were moved to a  particular address.

We are talking about an amount of more than $ 3.5 billion – this is more than 90 thousand Bitcoins.

The background is as follows: in the summer of 2016, criminals stole 119,756 BTC from the exchange. At that time, they were worth approximately $71.8 million. After that, most of the stolen assets were blacklisted. Since their movement is monitored, it is difficult for attackers to withdraw funds through large centralized exchanges.

Funds were moved several times: in May, in August, in October, in December 2020, and also in April 2021.

In February 2019, the US government returned more than 27 thousand Bitcoins converted into dollars to exchange users. These funds went exclusively to the owners of RRT (Recovery Right Token) tokens.

In 2020, representatives of the exchange informed the public that they had failed to get on the trail of hackers and promised a reward for helping to catch the criminals.

The Bitfinex hack in August 2016 led to the collapse of the crypto market, but today's movement of Bitcoins did not affect the market: as of the time of writing, the price of this asset is $ 38,899.86, it has grown over the past day by 3.92%.
