Reddit Plans To Add Support For NFT Avatars
The popular Internet forum Reddit followed in the footsteps of the social network Twitter and began testing NFT avatars on its platform.
Reddit has been experimenting with various NFT initiatives for a long time. For these projects, the site even created a separate subdomain – nft.reddit.com. At the time of writing, the subsite advertises themed NFTs.
Last year, the site released a collection of its own NFTs based on Ethereum – CryptoSnoos. Officials have now announced that potentially, users will get the option to buy avatars with non-fungible tokens and set them as their profile photos. At the same time, the company stressed that it is still testing the technology.
Last week, a similar update became available to Twitter Blue users. They now have the opportunity to set any NFT they own as their profile photo, rather than being limited to a specific collection. Twitter also supports integration with six crypto wallets, unlike Reddit, which only works with MetaMask. In addition, Twitter visually highlights NFT avatars and frames them with a hexagonal border instead of around one.
However, not everyone appreciated Twitter's NFT plans. For example, Tesla CEO Elon Musk called it “annoying” that the social network is wasting engineering resources on “nonsense” by implementing NFT support. However, the cryptocurrency community did not agree with the message of the head of Tesla. Netizens reminded him that the electric vehicle corporation itself had recently begun accepting payments in the dogecoin (DOGE) meme cryptocurrency.
Following Twitter, several other social platforms have hinted at possible NFT integration. So, it became known that Facebook and Instagram are working on tools that allow sharing non-fungible tokens. And this week, YouTube revealed its plans for the technology.
